The celebration of the Chinese Lunar year goes back centuries. 

There are 12 different creatures represented in the Chinese calendar.  A different animal is commemorated each year.  After 12 years the animals are repeated.

The True Start of the Chinese New year

The true start of the Chinese new year varies with the zodiac cycle of the new moon.  Usually the new year in China begins with the cycle of the moon (in late January or February).  Because of this, the information in the table above is approximate.  If you were born between January 1 and 20th look at the year prior to your birth for your lunar animal. If born between January 21 and February 21 click here to discover the actual begin date of your new year.

Australia lunar series SILVER coins:

Australia is well known as a producer of silver and gold.  Their coin designs hold a prominent place as some of the most beautiful in the world.  In 1996 Australia began producing the Lunar gold series coins.  In 1999 the Lunar silver series was started. Each year the design changes to match the Chinese Year of the Animal.  In 2005, the celebrated animal is the "Rooster".  For 2006 - Year of the Dog - silver and gold coins.

Australia started producing the Lunar gold coins series in 1996 with the first "Year of the Rat" or "Year of the Mouse" coins.  Since then they have produced gold and silver coins of various sizes including: 1996 - Rat/Mouse, 1997 - OX, 1998 - Tiger, 1999 - Rabbit, 2000 - Dragon, 2001 - Snake,  2002 - Horse, 2003 - Sheep/GOAT, 2004 - Monkey, 2005 - Rooster, and for 2006 - Dog.  Some are getting quite hard to find.  Australia also makes gold Kangaroo coins.

 These represent the First Series lunar coins, ending in 2007 with the Year of the Pig.  In 2008 Australia began minting a second series of lunar coins.  These Series II lunar gold coins will continue for another 12 years.
