Question: It's the middle of the year, and all of the new US statehood or National Parks quarters have not been released for the year. How is it that some dealers are selling "proof" state or Parks quarters that reportedly have not been released at the bank, at least that's what our bank is saying.
John's Answer: As you know, the US mint releases five state quarters each year, and the release dates for distributing coins to the banks is spread out over the year. Normally, a new state quarter is issued every 2 to 3 months. (Click here to see the order in which they are to be released.) This schedule is for "circulation strike" coins that are released to the banks for use in commerce. They carry the P or D mint mark. The mint also produces special sets for collectors called "proof sets". These proof sets contain coins with the "S" mint mark. They are made in limited quantities, sell for a higher price, and feature especially nice "proof" condition coins. Each proof set contains one of each design of the state quarter released in that year. The proof sets are usually released in early spring. These offer the only available specimens of a few of the quarters, at least for a few months, until the other "circulation strikes" are released later in the year. If you want to be the first on your block to have the new statehood quarters, try acquiring one of the new proof quarter sets. Better yet buy one because it's a much lower mintage, better quality and very beautiful.
