In 1999 the US mint began producing the 50
States Quarter coin series. Each year 5 state
quarters are produced commemorating the joining of the Union of five
states.
In addition to the "P" and "D" mint
nickel-copper-clad quarters made for circulation, special
proof coins are produced with "S" mint marks.
These nickel-copper-clad proof coins and sets are sold for a limited time during that
year and are housed in blue holders.
Additionally, a limited number of "silver" proof sets have been
minted with the dimes, quarters, and half dollars being
made of 90% silver (like US coins minted in 1964 and
earlier). These sets, containing a "Silver" version
of the state "S" mint quarters, are usually more
expensive and are housed in a red
plastic holder.
For the years 1999 through 2003 the only way
to obtain the silver quarters was to purchase a complete set
that also included cents and other coins.
These sets have one plastic holder with the State quarters in
it and a separate holder with the cents and other
coins in it.

Many quarter collectors made it be known
that they were not interested in the other size coins. The US mint
listened to their concerns and began making the "silver"
quarter set by itself in 2004. Consequently, silver quarters from
1999 through 2003 are available only when someone is willing
to split up their set, and sell the quarters separately from
the other size coins. The "S" mint proof Silver
quarters from 1999 through 2003 listed below are from one of
these sets. These coins are housed in the US official
government
mint red plastic holder (but have no cardboard box or COA).
2004 and later sets are packaged as noted in each
description below.

These are the
"silver" S mint state proof quarters, packaged in an
official government plastic red holder and colored outer
box.
The set features the five 2006 new State Quarters:
Nevada (The Silver State), Nebraska (Chimney Rock),
Colorado (Colorful Colorado), North Dakota (Badlands With
Buffalo), and South Dakota (Mount Rushmore And Pheasant).
Each set also contains the COA (certificate of authenticity)
card as issued by the mint.
