Important - The information found on this page comes from coin publications, magazines, interview articles, and the US Mint's press releases and website. We adjust the numbers as we receive new information. These charts take into account "mintages" or "estimated mintages" that have been released to various news media outlets. The mint has been known to adjust final mintage numbers sometimes decades after a coin was produced.

Uncirculated gold American Eagle and Silver Eagle coins are unique in that the mint produces them according to what they think they can sell. If coins are left at the end of the year, they might continue selling them until they are gone. The problem with the mint's web numbers is that you don't know if there were any coins of from the previous year sold during the current year, or how many of the current year's coins might be held over and sold next year.
After a period of time, sometimes years later, the mint will issue an "official" mintage specifying how many of that years coins were minted. Note that even the final mintage numbers might be adjusted by the mint as they evaluate sales/returns and adjust their bookkeeping.
This information may be incomplete (or incorrect) and may change until the mint announces "official" mintages.

Roman Numerals on American GOLD EAGLE COINS:
When gold eagle coins were first produced in 1986, the US mint decided to put the date on the American Eagle gold coins in the form of Roman Numerals. After several years of feedback (and complaints) from the public, they ceased using Roman Numerals. Consequently the years from 1986 to 1991 have Roman Numeral dates, while the years from 1992 on don't. Here are what the Roman Numerals look like for these years:
