Older United States silver coins (made in 1964 and before) are now in demand because of their silver content. (Many were coins melted down years ago.) At one time these were referred to as - junk silver - because they had no special collector value at the time. The term Junk silver is still used today to refer to old US silver coins. However, times have changed. Today "junk silver coins" are becoming harder and harder to find.
When you buy $1.00 worth (face value or spendable value) of United States silver dimes it weighs the same (and has the same silver content) as a $1.00 in silver US quarters, and $1.00 in junk silver half dollars. For example, 10 United States' dimes, 4 quarters, or 2 halves all have the same weight and are 90% pure silver composition.

A typical dollar face value in circulated US silver coins when it was minted contained silver equal to about 71 % of a troy ounce* of pure refined silver.

Get two rolls of old United States silver dimes made between 1916 and 1945. Each roll contains 50 circulated coins. This lot contains One hundred silver mercury dimes in all ($10.00 Face value). A typical roll contains mostly dates in the 1940's with 95% (or more) of the dates readable. Most will grade Good to Extremely Fine condition. These winged Liberty dimes are 90% pure silver. They are nick-named the "Mercury" dime because the winged Liberty head design (on the front) is thought to look like the goddess Mercury. However, the wings in Liberty's hair are meant to symbolize "liberty of thought".

Each lot of twenty silver "Walkers" is different - pulled right from a bag -- similar to those in the scan. All have readable dates. A sampling shows most all are in the 1940's (some with D or S mint marks) and vary in circulated grades from about Good to Very Fine condition.

Like the other silver coins issued during those days, Walking Liberty halves are made of coin silver containing 90% silver and 10% copper. Each mint issued coin has a weight of about 12.50 grams, which equals about 36% of an ounce of pure silver.

* - A typical dollar's face value (in any size silver coins) weighed about 80% (8 tenths) of a troy ounce when minted. Since the coins are 90% pure, a typical dollar's face value in 90% US silver coins would equal about 71% of an ounce of pure solid silver. Allow a variance of 2 to 4 % less than that for the normal wear that you find on rolls and bags of junk silver coins.

Important note: When silver was hitting record high prices, large quantities of 90% junk silver US coins were melted by refineries for their silver content. The result is that there are fewer bags of silver coins available today. Due to this and the current economic situation, some silver coin bags may be priced above melt value or temporarily out of stock.
