Platinum Coin Mintage numbers for

US Platinum eagle coins

 Four different sizes of US Platinum Eagle coins were made each year: 

• Tenth ounce - $10 legal tender face value

• Fourth ounce - $25 legal tender face value

• Half ounce - $50 legal tender face value

• One ounce - $100 legal tender face value 

After 2008 the smaller size platinum bullion coins were no longer produced, because the US mint decided they were not selling enough of them to make it worthwhile.  However, the one ounce size platinum eagle coins continued to be minted. 

According to some coin advisors, the resulting low mintages of the Platinum American Eagle coins makes them an interesting investment opportunity.

Each legal tender government issued coin is made of 99.95% pure platinum and features a close up portrait of the Statue of Liberty’s head on the front.  During most years the United States Platinum Eagle coins were minted in both Proof and Uncirculated condition.

Although the design of the Platinum Bullion Uncirculated Coin versions remains the same each year, the proof version has a different reverse design each year.

* - The above mintages now include coins that were issued in platinum coin sets as well as those sold individually.   Often The United States Mint often does not release the “official” mintages of these platinum coins until several years after they have been produced.  Note that some of above figures have been compiled from a variety of sources and include estimates based on press releases, preliminary sales figures, or noteworthy experts opinions. Use your own resources when making investment decisions.  Number of platinum coins produced in most years is small, thereby making many dates somewhat scarce and hard to locate.

Platinum coin Mint marks –

Proof and Brilliant uncirculated versions are made each year, in each size.  The proofs have a W mint mark on the reverse, indicating they were minted at the West Point United States government mint.  The Brilliant uncirculated don’t.  They were produced at the United States government mint in Philadelphia.  Each coin is legal tender and backed by the United States government.  Click here to see the difference between a proof vs. uncirculated coin.
