The History of ANACS

ANACS was created 1972 by the American Numismatic Association (ANA).  The ANA is the largest non-profit coin collector organization in the world and is chartered by the U.S. Congress.

The original purpose of ANACS was to utilize experts in the hobby to certify coins as genuine. At that time a growing (although small) number of counterfeit and altered coins began entering the market place. The knowledge of counterfeit detection was in its infancy.

Originally, ANACS purpose was to authenticate coins for a fee.  Authentic coins were photographed and a certificate was issued showing the photo of the actual coin.

In 1979 ANACS began grading coins. ANACS uses the ANA grading standards found in the “The Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States Coins.”  Coins were given a two part grade.  One grade for the obverse and another for the reverse.  For example, a silver dollar might be labeled MS-60/63, meaning MS60 on the front and MS63 on the back. During this time photo certificates were issued that showed the coin as genuine and gave it a grade. Additional comments may have been added to the certificate to point out any unusual details.

ANACS Coin Certification and Encapsulation

Encapsulating coins in plastic holders (or slabs) began in 1989.  Around that time the American Numismatic Association sold ANACS to the publishers of Coin World. In 2005 ANACS was purchased by Anderson Press.  It continues to operate as an independent third party authentication and grading service, with millions of coins graded over the years.  Today, ANACS, America’s oldest grading service, remains one of the most popular grading services and backs its grading with the ANACS guarantee.
